Hi everyone, I hope you still remember me. I’ve been away for almost a year now. For the past 1 year, I have been volunteering overseas doing different volunteering work abroad. Because of the free volunteering work I did, I was able to go and see many countries. Volunteering overseas is a great idea to see a country like a local as well as helping making other people’s better and happier. It’s also a great opportunity to mingle with amazing people, work with great organization and make connections while volunteering overseas. If you are looking into volunteering abroad for free, this is some of my tips to volunteer overseas for free:
1) Look into organization that offers accommodation and food in return. This would help you reduce your cost while you are volunteering overseas. Some even will help you with visa extensions; such as providing you their services or offering you some compensation. In some cases, if you are lucky, they would offer you a small stipend to help with food and expenses. If you decided to pay for either your food or accommodation, make sure that the organization doesn’t take advantage of make money out of it. There are so many so called volunteering websites out there that charge a fee for you to volunteer, trust me, the money goes into their pocket instead of going to the community that you are helping. The usual volunteering is free, don’t pay exorbitant fees!
2) I use some of this paid websites such as Workaway to find some of the free volunteering spot abroad. What Workaway offers are usually work exchange for accomodation, food and tours. Workaway charges a fee of 23 Euro for a 2 years access to their host list on their website. I actually like using workaway’s website, besides volunteering, you get the chance to actually live with the local and get to know them better. Workaway is great for people who are willing to work a couple hours a day for accommodation and food and get the rest of the time to explore the place. I am currently working in HCS Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia!
3) Are you brave, physically and mentally strong? Interested with humanitarian projects and working in a post disaster zone? If you are, volunteering overseas for NGOs that provide disaster relief or S & R is also another great option to volunteer abroad for free. Work is usually really tough, under hot sun, prone to post disaster’s diseases and having the possibility of seeing death body and infrastructure destruction. But, you will be working for an amazing cause! I had the opportunity to volunteer with All Hands Volunteer in The Philippines for 7 months doing demolishing and rebuilding. It is an amazing experience working with various NGO and people from all around the world. It is also a great platform for you to learn about disaster management, international relation and disaster recovery. I would totally suggest people to this once in all their volunteering abroad planning.
4) There are also other option to actually work with NGO or volunteering organization abroad! I found about this while I was volunteering in the Philippines. The websites I use to stalk all these opportunity is Idealist. org or Omprakash. org ! These websites list out all the job, volunteering and internship abroad. I found a lot of job opportunities on these website. It’s great place to start if you are still new into the volunteering abroad for free thing!
All in all, always remember, don’t be discouraged by all the websites asking for exorbitant fees to volunteer abroad, now that I’ve listed these tips, use them wisely and start applying to volunteer overseas for free! I hope you have an amazing journey volunteering abroad and found happiness in doing this and eventually making it a lifestyle.
Till then, travel safe
